What is Kratom?
Kratom, or the scientific name: Mitragyna speciosa, is a leaf from a tropical evergreen tree in the coffee family. It contains several alkaloids, the most notable being mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine which behave as partial mu-opioid receptor agonists. It has been used since at least the 19th Century, likely longer, by the peoples of Southeast Asia where it grows in the jungles. It harvested from native trees in the jungles and on plantations.
It has been used to treat pain, diarrhea , opiate withdrawal and other maladies. It is also used as an energy, focus and motivation supplement like coffee.
In small doses it is stimulating while in large doses it can act as a sedative.
What Kratom is not
Kratom is not a drug. Kratom is not an opiate. Kratom is not a synthetic substance. Naturally occurring Kratom is a safe herbal supplement that’s more akin to tea and coffee than any other substances.
Kratom behaves as a partial mu-opioid receptor agonist and is used for pain management, energy, even depression and anxiety that are so common among Americans. Kratom contains no opiates, but it does bind to the same receptor sites in the brain. Chocolate, coffee, exercise and even human breast milk hit these receptor sites in a similar fashion.

Kratom & The Law
Kratom is not an FDA approved herb, medicine or supplement. On the contrary, the FDA has launched a smear campaign using false facts and incorrect terminology. As of March 2018 Kratom is legal in all states except: Indiana, Wisconsin, Vermont, Arkansas, Alabama and Rhode Island. Kratom is banned in Sarasota County, FL, San Diego, CA, Ontario, OR, Jerseyville, IL and Washington D.C.
In 2016 the DEA announced an “Emergency Scheduling” of kratom that would have placed it in the same legal standing as heroin and LSD. The scheduling never took place due to enormous outcry from the supporters of the plant as well as a long awaited 8-Factor Analysis by Dr. Jack Henningfield, Ph.D., vice president of Research, Health Policy, and Abuse Liability at Pinney Associates, concluding that there is “insufficient evidence” for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to ban or otherwise restrict kratom under the Controlled Substances Act. According to the comprehensive Henningfield analysis, kratom’s potential for abuse and dependence is no greater than such widely used and unscheduled substances as “nutmeg, hops, St. John’s Wort, chamomile, guarana, and kola nut.
What Are Kratom Strains?

Like many plants, kratom has more than one variety.
The most common strains are Green, Red, White, and Horned. The color specifies the coloring of the vein in the leaf while ‘Horned’ means a leaf that has jagged edges instead of the typical smooth round edges.
Also sold but not quite as common are Yellow and Gold. Yellow is supposed to be green that is oxidized in the sun, which many believe makes the leaf stronger. Gold is the same except it is red which is left in the sun.
Even less popular is bentuangie. Bentuangie is a newer red strain and it is said to be processed with intentional fermenting. Other sites online claim it is “A new strain found deep in the jungle!”, but we’re sticking with fermentation.
Within these strains, there is further variance in strength and effect depending on the type of tree, harvesting method, maturity and size of the leaves and the region where it was grown.
For instance “Red Bali” means red veined kratom grown in Bali. In reality, it is very unlikely that it is actually grown in Borneo.
Just about all the kratom sold today originates from Borneo (also known as Kalimantan), with much less coming from Malaysia and Sumatra. A portion of Malaysia is Indonesian while the other part is Malaysian.
Vendors do their best to name strains accurately, but this can be difficult due to the Indonesian farmers and exporters often telling vendors what they believe they want to hear.
Here’s an example:
Indonesian Kratom Farmer:
“My red vein kratom comes from the exotic island of Bali, unlike most red strains which come from Borneo!”
“Our Thai Maeng Da is grown secretly in Thailand and shipped to us in Indonesia!”
In reality, it’s almost certainly grown in Borneo.
This practice is commonplace in any market. Those selling their product try to make it look as appealing as possible to prospective buyers.
Further complicating the name issue is that users have come to rely on these names, so changing them now would confuse many new and current kratom users. Pious Lion plans to take a trip to Indonesia in the very near future to attempt to get to the bottom of this and other questions.
What is Maeng Da Kratom?
The name translates to “Pimp Grade” in Thai and it is certainly the most well known strain of kratom. How it originated is something of a mystery, but legend has it that Maeng Da Kratom came from the grafting of one kratom tree to another to form a tree with more potent leaves. The term is now typically used by vendors to identify their best kratom.
To keep it simple, you have Green, Red and White. Some of it is “horned” but most is not. For all intents and purpose, Maeng Da essentially means “High Quality”.
